And fragile... any future enchantment will overwrite the "permanent" one.
Plus any that have an end condition other than time (such as "next casting") end anyway.

That being said... I think the Illium production has been upped, so they're not unachievable. Just have to find the right balance between acquirable amounts of Illium and enchantments worth casting.

Ilium production has been improved, but not by much.

If I've caught every reference.. the Ilium available per season is...

Bourse Positions
Syrene's Wisdom (7 Rings)
Scorrero Nets (5 Rings)

National Resources
Steel Fist - Orcs (8 Rings)
Broken Shore Bounty - Brass Coast (7 Rings)
Stonefield Ice Caves - Wintermark (5 Rings)
Regario Dossier - League (4 Rings)

The Conclave
Archmagi Vaults (12 Rings)

For a total of 48 per season across the Empire.
That covers only reliable sources of course.. there is still the possibility of the odd ring or so coming from other sources.

Potential additional sources are:
General loot from downtime campaigns - unlikely
Possible illium loot from a battlefield or skirmish during the event - unlikely
The Bourse open and closed auctions - much more likely, especially for the closed auction I suspect
Bargaining with Eternals - who knows?

More like;
Almost impossible
Damn unlikely
Possible, but unlikely
Doubtful

Ilium is supposed to be a very rare, insanely powerful, metal. What PD have done to it makes it worth bugger all. I mean, seriously, you need one third of the entire Empire's quarterly income as a bare minimum to do anything. No one is going to try for that and pay what those of us with Ilium want for the stuff.

A good example is Rivers of Gold. Magnitude 12 ritual, which means to make it permenant you need 36 rings of Ilium. 36. That's 1/4 of the entire Empire's supply of Ilium for one ritual that can be overwritten by any other ritual that targets business'. Or about 180 thrones (Ilium would have been going for atleast 4 thrones E1.)

*reads page again*
Three times? Wow... okay then.
Well, Permanent Enchantments are going to be thin on the ground, I think.
... but then so are Artifacts.

No I can't imagine that a couple of Autumn mages with a mana site and business between them are going to care much about putting 36 Illium into a permanent buff. But some business owner somewhere who has never been closer to an Autumn mage than a guy he met at a party one time... he might be interested. If it only gets cast once, make it count, right?

They are worth it, but they are going to be RARE... as the right ones can be far more robust than mere items:
I'd point out that the only spell that would break that permanent Rivers of Gold is another Enchantment cast on that business (not on the Character, Region or Empire) and that the willing participation of the Owner is required to Enchant it.
Curses wont cut it, nor can anyone knock you out and enchant you while you're asleep.

If it weren't so darned expensive I'd be shocked that there were no Verdant Bountry'd forests or Sular's Promised fleets at time in. And need I suggest ancient and powerful Covens with "Standing at the Threshold"? Wink

---
By devaluing 1 ring of Illium, it also ups the likelihood that Potions requiring Illium will see the light of day.

---
Not to say that I wouldn't like it to be cheaper, but the permanent-enchantment industry will need to be more of a Luxury good than we first thought/hoped.
Lets see how it gets used in play...

You make some good points, and I'd love a permanent enchantment on my fleet, but there's no way I could pay for it.
