At Mael 2 this year, we were given a little preview of the coinage that will be in use for Empire.

As expected, with there only being the single entity that is the Empire.. there is only 1 currency. It's called the Euro.....

Ok.. Ok.. that last part isn't true...

There are 3 coins within the currency. Rings, Crowns & Thrones and these appear to be in denominations of 1 or 5 only.
How many of each coin make up the next one up hasn't yet been announced, but I'm expecting a non-decimal, but relatively simple currency. Perhaps 5 Rings = 1 Crown. 5 Crowns = 1 Throne.

(Wonder how many One Ring puns this is going to generate...)

Actually I remember hearing a quote along the lines of as there are 8 nations in the empire so there are 8 crowns to a throne. I have a feeling I may have remembered the number wrong but it wasn't something nice like 5.

It's not going to be 5 ring to 1 crown; why bother making a 5 ring coin? It would be like making a 100p coin...
There are 9 nations so it could be 9 rings to 1 crown, 9 crowns to 1 throne.

Anyone heard any more on this? I'm looking to make an abacus and can't until I have the denominations.

From Matt P via facebook:

There are 20 rings in a Crown and 8 crowns in a throne (Urizen joined the Empire after the coins had been minted).

*Checks* Yep, in response to the same question I put up on FB. Well it's info I needed.

I asked the question on facebook a while back about the value of money - I.e what 1 drink would cost - What's cheap, what's pricey.. The consensus was to wait until char creation and to see what people on the field have.. Then use a blackboard and adjust the prices as and when needed.
I imagine it will be in the realms of rings - It would be cool to avoid another 'pfeck' situation where the lowest denomination is worthless. I think that won't happen with a common currency though.

I'm well excited by it all!

So.. does this mean Wisdom is the most valuable virtue and Ambition the least?

Probably not, things with an OC cost usually cost more than an IC lammie. For example; a meal at the JL would cost the same as a cheap inexpensive talisman. Most bar charged 6 Schillings for a pint (same cost as an IC weapon).

The best is as per consensus; wait for the character creation rules and look what the income levels are. For the restaurant, i'm going to be looking at what a income level 3 can afford, that way it's not so cheap that the poor can eat there every day and most 'rich' characters can boast that they do.

Perhaps just at the time the coins were minted? I'd be tempted to make up some historical context to justify that interpretation.

I wonder if PD will later change the currency to add another crown for Urizen (so it becomes 9 crowns to 1 throne). Maybe just to hit everyone with a plot stick...

No, you need to look at it like this;
1 Ring - Ambition - I must increase my wealth.
1 Throne - Prosperity - I'm doing well.
20 Thrones - Wisdom - I have made some wise investments.
100 Thrones - Virtue - In my own way I am virtuous.

5 Thrones - Vigilance - Someone's out to steal my money
4 Crowns - Pride - Look at me! I'm Rich!
5 Rings - Courage - You'll need it to make any more than this...
1 Crown - Loyalty - What a good little citizen you are...

Or some group of players makes it there personal goal to add another crown to the throne, in possibly the most controversial and sweeping of pedantic changes achievable in the system. I mean we have a senate I see no reason why an alliance of uber-pedants couldn't try to push it though. (Because that sounds like a fun game)

Zendrik wrote:

Or the inverse, after all people are more likely to be holding the lower or middle denomination coins, so Loyalty and Pride are the most important :p

From FB Page

Matthew Pennington Empire will use a free market economy system in which players set the prices of items rather than the organisers (a planned economy). As a result I've no idea what things will be worth. Iirc correctly, the starting income of a normal character is 18rings, certainly it's about that level. So every character will receive that amount of money as a minimum every event.

Hmmm, so as a rough comparison one ring would be about equal to a schilling from maelstrom.
Of course we'll need to wait for the character generation rules to be released before we can get a better idea (as in how much does a dagger cost in character creation?)

PD have said you won't be able to buy stuff in character creation. Only crafters will get one of each item they can make.

The way I look at it.. All the money is mine. It's just being held by other people for now.

So.. Thinking maybe a ring would by the cheapest drink at a low city bar. Perhaps charge 2-3 for starters in my bar, and adjust as necessary.

A little more info in incomes from Matt P via facebook comments

Quote :
Matthew Pennington
18 Rings is the income of an individual with no direct source of financial income. 198 rings is the income of an individual with a farm or a business.
Basically everyone you meet at the first event will either have an income of 18 rings or 198 rings.

So a business gives you an extra 9 crowns (or 1 Throne 1 Crown) above basic income.

So the magnatude 15 Autumn ritual "Rivers of Gold" effectively doubles the value of a Business.

Suggesting that 8 mana crystals can get you 9 crowns (6 for each subsequent 9), if you have the right friends. Someone has put far too much thought into the opportunity cost in the "Rituals" thread already, though.

Unless I'm very much mistaken you don't need to buy mundane equipment at character gen. The only weapons and armour that need lammies (ribbons?) are magical items.

I think pretty much everything except magic items, potions and resources is "if you can physrep it, you can have it"

Ooh, interesting to note that we have the potential for a new conversion between mana and other substances.

Carve the Crystal Guardian needs 10 mana for a mastered team and produces a military unit that can raid... a baseline raiding action generates 10 random resources (from the base 8 types)*. Therefore it could be said that 10 mana can equal 10 of any other resource type... but you lose the mana site for the next season, so the true cost is (at least) 17 mana.

Otoh, Conclave of Trees and Shadows turns a Forest into a military unit that is "particularly effective at raiding"... when we know what kind of boost that means in real terms then the 10 mana will have turned a 10-of-one-type into a larger number of random resources.

... Carve is aimed more for home defence, though. How dire do things have to be before we spend all the mana and Coven-time to Unleash the Golem Hordes!(TM) in defence of Urizen?
